About The Event

Horse camp on Mackinac Island offers an atmosphere for campers to refine their horseback riding skills and horsemanship knowledge while making new friends in a team-based environment.  Camp is located at the Mackinac Community Equestrian Center, providing campers with a superior experience. We structure camps and programs around team building so that campers have the opportunity to build confidence, trust, and new friendships with their fellow campers. Our camp is staffed with knowledgeable horsemen and horsewomen, providing a safe environment for our campers. The horses we utilize during camp are also well-qualified for camp use.

We ask that all campers bring a swimsuit, have long pants for riding, and pack a lunch. Helmets and boots will be available if needed. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

During this more intensive Pony Camp compared to our first camp, campers are expected to be able to ride the three basic gaits: walk, trot, and canter.  Every day students will be expected to provide daily care for the horse assigned to them under the guidance of our counselors. Each day students will be able to ride in two lessons a day, a dressage lesson and a jump lesson. On the last day of camp, parents are encouraged to attend a mini-show in which campers have the opportunity to show off their newly acquired skills! Other topics during camp include:

  • Horsemanship and Groundwork basics
  • Equitation and Fundamentals of riding the flat and over fences
  • Paint – A – Pony: campers learn parts of the horse and then must identify them on their pony
  • Horse Safety
  • Equine Health and Nutrition
  • Equine Biomechanics
  • Building a Jumper Course
  • Show Grooming
  • A group trail riding experience around the island
  • Horse Games, relay races, and more!

A 50%  non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot on the roster, the remaining balance is due at day of check in.
