Our
winter program is focused on non-riding projects, such as learning
about different breeds of horses, parts of the horse, parts
of English and Western bridles and saddles, safety around horses
and the language of horses. We accomplish this through the
use of the 4-H workbook "Horsing Around," available materials
such as videos, books, magazines, and the internet, using the
resources at the school, public library and a video club.
We meet once monthly for an hour to an hour and a half after
school in a classroom at the Mackinac island Public School.
Each meeting is focused on a different breed of horse, safety
item, workbook project and video or hand-on demonstration,
plus a snack.
In April we have a 4-H Horse Club Family Fair to display and
award our accomplishments over the winter. In June our Summer
Riding Program begins.
